21st Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop announces call for fellows

The Journalism Department of the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines, is once again calling for applicants to the Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop. The deadline for submission of applications is on October 30, 2017.

 

With the theme, “Science Journalism: Blue Economy for Sustainable Seas,” the five-day workshop will be held from December 4-8, 2017 in Iloilo.

Funded through the Communicating Science and Technology Research and Development at the University of the Philippines (CoST-UP), an Emerging Interdisciplinary Research (EIDR) program of the UP System, the workshop aims to train 25 to 30 journalists and regional science information officers from the Visayas.

 

Full fellowship is available to journalists (food, accommodation and transportation expenses) while partial fellowship is available to regional science information officers to cover only food and accommodation.

 

Applicants should be currently either engaged in media or employed as government science information officer. They must submit (1) the filled-out application form; (2) a brief biographical sketch with a 2x2 identification photo; (3) a published/broadcast news or feature story in print, electronic or online media; and (4) a letter of endorsement from anyone of the following: applicant’s editor or supervisor, national or local press club head, a media relations/information officer of any state university or college in the Visayas, or a Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop alumnus/alumna. For the information officers, a published sample work is not required.

 

The Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop is a flagship project of the Journalism Department. Since its first workshop in 1985, it has already trained hundreds of community journalists from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
